The bridge is 332 m (1,089 ft) long, with a 182 m (597 ft) main span. Constructed by Franz Dischinger, it opened in 1956, and it was the world's longest cable-stayed bridge at that time. The development of cable-stayed bridges is traced from 1784 to the present. The first modern cable-stayed bridge, the Stromsund Bridge, was completed in 1955 in Sweden.
